Congregational Activities

Book Group

Visitors are welcome to join in the discussion of the book currently being read. Books are chosen by the group with an eye towards Unitarian Universalism liberal theology, philosophy, politics, science and arts.

Circle Dinners

Monthly dinners held in members’ homes are designed to provide one more avenue to gather with friends, meet new people, and share good food and conversation.

Congregation Choir

This choir is for adults who love to sing. We rehearse weekly on Wednesdays from 7 – 9 PM. We sing at Sunday services 2-3 times per month. We also perform at the Christmas Eve services and we self-produce our annual Cabaret Show in the spring. We perform yearly with other UU choirs in the Valley. If you like to sing all kinds of music, Congregation Choir is the place for you!

Family Choir

Green Sanctuary Committee

This committee is charged with motivating our UUCP community to be agents of change for environmental awareness and sustainability.  Our current focus is on the 12 projects our congregation will undertake to become certified as a Green Sanctuary.

Job Club

The Job Club meets with people on a one-on-one basis to provide job search assistance.

New Day Center

The first Sunday of every month we cook and serve Posse Stew, salad, bread & butter, and brownies to between 100 and 150 residents of the New Day Family Transitional Shelter.  Help is always welcome!

Outdoor Group

The Our hikes are usually scheduled for the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month, plus New Year's Day. On a typical hike day we meet between 7 and 8 AM at a predetermined meeting place and carpool from there. We drive to the trailhead and hike for about 4-6 hours, usually breaking for lunch along the trail. We drive back to Phoenix, sometimes stopping for a snack or dinner on the way. Poetry Coffee House

This group meets the first Sunday of every month in Annex Room C from 9:00 – 10:15 AM to share original poetry as well as favorite selections from other poets.

Soulful Sundown Band

The Soulful Sundown Band performs at the monthly Soulful Sundown Services (September – May).  They rehearse an hour before the service.  Guitarists, clarinetists, violists, drummers, singers, etc. are all welcome!

Social Action Committee (SAC)

The Social Action Committee fosters congregational involvement in social issues by creating a balance of four aspects of social responsibility within the congregational community: social education, social action, social witness, and social service.  We host a  luncheon with a speaker on the third Sunday of the month after services to which all are invited.  

Traveling Second Fridays Group

This activity group meets on the second Friday of each month in the winter and spring months at 7 PM at UUCP.  We share travel experiences with slides, pictures, stories, souvenirs, etc.  Each month a different presenter invites members to join an "arm chair" visit to a new locale.

Children’s Ministry (CM)

A progression of CM programs for the three-year-olds through high school age youth encourages religious growth and ethical decision making, while focusing on such content areas as nature, human relationships, comparative religion, and Unitarian Universalism. Children 0-3 years old participate in a unique program based on the UU philosophy of respect for individual differences. Both adult and children’s classes are taught by teams of dedicated volunteers – men, women, and youth from our congregation.

UU Early Education Cooperative (UUEEC)

The Unitarian Universalist Early Education Cooperative is a nationally accredited preschool that brings parents and children together in a warm flexible environment to foster a community of supportive parenting and growth. Our school is committed to hands-on, child initiated curriculum in which all aspects of a child’s cognitive, social/emotional, linguistic, creative and physical development are promoted through developmentally appropriate practice. Each child is valued as a unique, worthwhile and capable individual. Children are encouraged to make their own choices, to be responsible for their own behavior and to respect the physical and spiritual space of others. The cooperative offers three different morning programs for ages two, three and four as well as an optional afternoon program, and an all-day transitional kindergarten program.

Young Religious UUs (YRUU)

YRUU is our high school aged youth group.  We meet every Sunday at 9:30 from late August to mid-June (when there are two services) and at 10:30 the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month during the summer.  Our time together is filled with youth- or advisor-facilitated discussions, social action projects, worship, community building and fun!

Addictions Ministry Committee

We plan & provide resources  for people whose lives have been damaged by addiction, helping them to heal and grow spiritually.  We offer assistance with awareness, education, prevention and treatment referral.  Resources include literature, first responders, faith-based workshops & support groups.

Adult Religious Education (ARE)

ARE is a cooperative program based on the interests and needs of the congregation. We offer both weeknight and Sunday classes that are a great opportunity to meet and get to know the people who make up our congregation. The scope of the classes spans from an orientation series on Unitarian Universalism (The New UU) to a classes exploring the goddess mythologies and Hinduism.

This committee meets the first Wednesday of each month to plan adult education curriculum, special events, and promotion of classes and events.

Covenant Groups

The purpose of Covenant Groups is to provide an opportunity for friends and members of UUCP to develop deeper connections and wider service within the congregational community.  The covenant group format promotes shared ministry in action.  COVENANT GROUPS are called that because the first thing a new group does is establish a list of guidelines which members "covenant" to follow, e.g. a commitment to attend meetings regularly, be on time, treat others with respect, be a good listener, maintain confidentiality, and carry out at least one project a year in support of the UUCP larger community, but each group is free to establish their own list.

Music Committee

The music committee is made up of choir members and friends of music at UUCP. We meet usually the 2nd Sunday of the month if the choir is singing on that Sunday. We plan Cabaret, approve music purchases and generally support the music at UUCP in any way that we can.

Partner Church Committee

The Partner Church Committee maintains a meaningful relationship with our partner church in Transylvania where Unitarianism was first established nearly 600 years ago.  This partnership is one of the oldest between a U.S. and Transylvanian congregation.  UUCP is the only Arizona congregation to participate in this program, which is maintained by the UU Association of North America.

Young Adult and Campus Ministry (YACM)

To meet the religious education needs of college students, the UUCP has developed a Young Adult and Campus Ministry program to provide outreach and ministry to campuses, and to provide a safe space for community, worship, and social action for young adults. Young Adults ages 18 – 35 meet every Sunday after services (around noon).

Operations

Buildings & Grounds Committee (B&G)

B&G is the committee that worships our space, ensuring repairs on our building and regular maintenance of our grounds. This committee is always in need of volunteers to help with yard upkeep and painting, repairs, and cleaning within the building. The yard work, pruning, raking and general cleanup restores the soul, and repair of our building, painting and general cleanup makes everyone feel good.

Membership Committee

The purpose of the membership committee is to attract, engage and retain new members of UUCP and to support and encourage all members to participate more fully in congregational life.

Membership Engagement Committee

This new committee's main goal is to promote membership engagement within the congregation.  They are working on processes for matching members' interests with opportunities within UUCP.

Nominating Committee

This committee identifies, screens, and recommends well-qualified, committed UUCP members to fill leadership positions within the congregation such as the Board of Trustees. Members are elected by the Congregation each year.

Publicity Committee

The Publicity/Website Committee gets out the word about the existence, ministries, and activities of the congregation.  The committee works closely with the UUCP Administrator.  As appropriate to each story, the publicity goes to the outside community via the website, press releases, and flyers, or to UUCP members and friends using the monthly Horizons newsletter, bulletin inserts, mass emails, and other methods.

Office Volunteers

Office volunteers assist the UUCP Administrator in regular, occasional and special tasks in the office and around the building. Most volunteers sign up for three hour shifts in the morning or afternoon.

Sanctuary Team

This committee plans the art exhibits on display in our Sanctuary, encourages "show and tell" for artists, and organizes open studios for artist to learn and paint. They also accept donations of art and store pieces.  The committee meets at the beginning and end of scheduled programs and as needed.

Sunday Services Committee

This committee plans and participates in services for periods during which the minister is not scheduled to speak, including the summer vacation. All together, they plan 14-17 services per year. The committee members identify and arrange for guest speakers and other service participants. They meet the first Tuesday of each month at 7 PM.

Unicare Committee

Unicare assists our members during times of ill health or for memorial services. We also attempt to celebrate joys in our congregation.

Ushers

It is the role of the ushers to insure that services run smoothly, both for the minister and the congregants.  Ushers greet members, pass out hymnals and order of service brochures each Sunday morning.  They also take the weekly collection and record receipts.

Affiliates

Desert View Learning Center (DVLC)

DVLC is a small, independent school located on the grounds of UUCP. Desert View is based on a philosophy of individualized instruction in a non-competitive classroom atmosphere. Classes are provided for children kindergarten through 4th grade.

Kids Kamp

Now in its 31st year, Kids Kamp is a day camp that provides fun, cooperative activities during the month of June.  Classes include drama, art, cooking, sports and games, dance and music.  The ages of the children range from 3 ½ through 11 years.

Sierra Ancha Wilderness UU Religious Association (SAWUURA)

Located below the Mogollon Rim and five miles south of Young, Arizona, SAWUURA is a beautiful 109 acres of wilderness nestled in the heart of the Sierra Ancha Wilderness and surrounded by thousands of acres of national forest. The SAWUURA property was acquired in the late 1970’s by a determined group of UUCP members.  Its purpose is to provide a religious, educational, and spiritual center for members and friends of several UU congregations who love being in nature.  To inquire about membership and further information, contact Lillian Habeich at the email address above.
