Last Saturday was a glorious day to be outside with a great group of people. Nine of us gathered at 7th Street Visitor’s Center to enjoy the rigorous hike around Shaw Butte on Trail 306. The back side is a steady steep climb up the mountain that got everyone’s heart pumping. Once on top we had a snack break and enjoyed the 360 degree view of the Phoenix Valley. Once down the mountain, five us us continued the conversation over eats at Scramble restaurant. We are especially excited that we had so many new folks join our group for the first time!

Another opportunity is coming up for a great hike on November 27, Thanksgiving Saturday! Laurel Hardin is leading this one and it is a family tradition for her to do this hike at this time of year. It will be our test to determine whether we had too much to eat on Thanksgiving! Can you still squeeze through Fat Man’s Pass?! That will be the question of the day. Details for Fat Man’s Pass Hike.

We have a reservation at Sunset Crater National Monument for a spring campout May 20-22. Detailed information will be coming as we get closer to the date. Put it on your calendar to save the date! You will not want to miss this!

As we resume hiking, we will need to be socially distanced. At the beginning of each hike, we will gather to introduce ourselves, masked, and ask what everyone is comfortable with. We will also make room for everyone to talk about what they are not comfortable with. This is to be part of the normal discussion, and we ask that you speak out about what you are not comfortable with.

Stay safe, and I hope to see you soon, live and in person, 6 feet away. To lead a hike or if you have questions, please contact outdoorgroup@phoenixuu.org
