Our next meeting will be held on March 14 at 6:30pm (please note the new time). A sometimes overlooked topic amongst outdoor folks is first aid. This can place hikers and outdoor folks in a very precarious place if unfortunate circumstances were to happen. This month we will be analyzing different aspects of first aid in the wilderness in an attempt to prevent the amount we harm we are exposed to in the wilderness.

We will have some additional events and resources coming up for this month. Below you will find resources to begin research for our badge activities. We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting.

Here are a few suggested activities:

  • Let’s talk about first aid kits. Do you have one? What is inside of it and why? Next, research the contents of a wilderness first aid kit.
  • Research different snakes that are a part of Arizona’s ecosystem. Write a couple sentences about how to identify them and why you might want to avoid them.
  • Research adverse health conditions related to extreme warm weather such as: the signs of dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and sunburn.
  • Research cold weather trauma that the body can experience due to severe cold such as: hypothermia and frostbite
  • Research the following medical tool terms and techniques and see if you can try some of them out:
    • What is a sling? Can you improvise a piece of clothing and tie a sling.
    • What is a splint? Can you figure out how to splint a part of your body?
    • What is a “Head-to-toe” scan?
